What the ACT actually looks like

English
Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and rhetorical skills, tested across five passages. Roughly 36 seconds per question.
Mathematics
Pre-algebra through trigonometry. A calculator is permitted, and the syllabus reaches further than the SAT.
Reading
Four passages covering prose fiction, social science, humanities and natural science. The tightest timing on the paper.
Science
Interpretation of experiments, data and conflicting viewpoints. It tests reasoning from data rather than recalled science.

Scoring
How the ACT is scored
1 to 36, as the average of the four section scores. Valid for No formal expiry, though universities typically prefer scores under 5 years old.

| 34 – 36 | Exceptional. Competitive for Ivy League admission. |
| 30 – 33 | Strong. Opens highly ranked universities. |
| 26 – 29 | Good. Competitive at many solid universities. |
| 21 – 25 | Above average. Workable at a wide range of institutions. |
| Below 21 | Limits options at selective universities. |

Who accepts the ACT
Accepted by every four-year university in the United States, with no preference over the SAT. Also accepted by universities in Canada and by some in the UK and Australia.

Preparation
How to prepare for the ACT
Pacing is the whole test
Reading gives you under nine minutes per passage and science under nine per set. Content knowledge matters less than finishing.
Science is not a science test
It tests reading graphs and experimental design, not memorised biology or chemistry. Students often over-prepare on content and under-practise the format.
No penalty for wrong answers
Never leave a blank. With five minutes remaining, fill every empty answer before the section closes.
ACT or SAT — try both once
Universities accept them equally. Sit a practice paper of each; students who read quickly usually score better on the ACT, and those who prefer time to think do better on the SAT.
