Reading
Academic passages from university-level texts, with questions on detail, inference, vocabulary in context and passage structure.
Listening
Three academic lectures and two campus conversations. Note-taking is permitted and effectively required — recordings play once.
Speaking
One independent task on a familiar topic and three integrated tasks combining reading, listening and speaking. Preparation is 15–30 seconds, responses 45–60.
Writing
One integrated task synthesising a reading passage and a lecture, and one academic discussion task responding to an online classroom prompt.

Scoring
How the TOEFL is scored
0 to 120, with each of the four sections scored 0 to 30. Valid for 2 years from the test date.
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 110 – 120 | Exceptional. Clears any requirement, including Ivy League. |
| 100 – 109 | Strong. Competitive for top-ranked US universities. |
| 90 – 99 | Good. Meets the requirement at most US universities. |
| 80 – 89 | Accepted by many programmes, though not the most selective. |
| Below 80 | Limits your options. Worth retaking before applying. |

Preparation
How to prepare for the TOEFL
Learn to take notes fast
Listening recordings play once and lectures run several minutes. Students who cannot note efficiently lose marks they could otherwise answer correctly.
Practise speaking to a timer
Forty-five seconds is shorter than it sounds. Rambling and running out of time both cost marks, and only rehearsal fixes the pacing.
There is no negative marking
Never leave a question blank. An informed guess costs nothing and occasionally earns a mark.
Type, do not write
Writing is typed under time pressure. If you type slowly, that alone can cost you ten points across the section.
