Exam format
What the IELTS actually looks like
2h 45m in total, across 4 sections.
Listening
Four recordings — two conversations and two monologues — played once only. Computer-delivered runs about 30 minutes, paper-based 40 with transfer time.
Reading
Academic uses three long texts from journals and newspapers. General Training uses shorter workplace and social texts. No extra transfer time is given.
Writing
Task 1 is a 150-word report describing a chart or process, or a letter in General Training. Task 2 is a 250-word essay and carries twice the marks.
Speaking
A face-to-face interview with an examiner, often scheduled on a different day: introduction, a two-minute long turn on a cue card, then a discussion.

Preparation
How to prepare for the IELTS
Start one to two months out
Long enough to fix weak sections, short enough that the material stays fresh. Cramming a week ahead moves scores by a fraction of a band at best.
Writing is where bands are lost
Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1. Most students under-practise it because essays take longer to mark than reading drills.
Speak out loud, daily
Speaking is the only section you cannot improve by reading. Fifteen minutes a day of speaking to a recorder beats an hour of silent revision.
Sit full mocks under timing
Listening is played once. Reading has no transfer time. Both punish students who have only practised in untimed conditions.
